The drive from Thurso along the coast to Durness is incredible. We pass beautiful sandy beaches with waves crashing against the shoreline, plenty of sheep meandering beside the road, and even some Highland coos. Tonight, we park on a cliff edge overlooking the beach. The sound of the waves is intense and soothing. The water is freezing, but I can’t resist running toward it, thinking I’ll have a great swim in the waves. As the sun sets, darkness falls quickly in this part of Scotland, and my mom insists we head back to the van for dinner.
Fresh from an early morning run along the beach at Durness we headed south taking in the magnificiant Kylesku Bridge before conquering the coastal route heading to Lochinver.
There is nothing quite like the single track roads of Scotland. Grateful that it was off season and the tourist traffic was very light. The views were absolutely stunning and the beaches incredible. Getting out to stretch my legs with another run and swim made me soo happy.
We finally reach Ullapool, but with the campsite already closed for the season, we stay in the council car park next to Tesco. Trucks are parked nearby, and their early starts wake me up. Leaving Ullapool, we head toward Kinlochewe, our next stop. Wow, wow, wow—the views just keep getting better! My mom stops frequently to take photos and let me wander around. The Inverewe Gardens have a really cool connection with New Zealand, which makes my mom happy since she’s from there.
