Why I Choose Local — Even When It Costs More
There's a print lab practically down the road from me I've been working with since setting up Wolfe & Fox.
Family-run. Three decades in the business. When I send them a file, I know what I'm getting back. Not because they're the cheapest option, but because thirty years of craft doesn't come at budget prices, and I'm not looking for budget prices.
Fine and serviceable isn't what Wolfe & Fox is for.
It starts with a value, not a strategy.
The choice to work with local and UK suppliers wherever possible isn't a marketing decision. It's just what I believe in the same way I'd rather buy eggs from the farm down the road than from a supermarket shelf.
When you invest in a portrait from Wolfe & Fox, part of that investment reaches a family business practically down the road that has been doing exceptional work for thirty years. That matters to me. I hope it matters to you too.
Choosing local isn't a compromise. It's a commitment.
The people behind the work.
It goes further than the print lab. For larger retouching jobs, there's a specialist retoucher — UK-based. The retouching itself is minimal and deliberate: if you look at a photograph of your dog and think "is that my dog? I'm not sure" it's been retouched too much. The authenticity of the original moment is the whole value.
There's also a sales consultant who handles the viewing sessions and showing the work beautifully, selling it on my behalf. It's genuinely difficult for a photographer to sell their own work. Having someone who believes in it and can present it without the self-consciousness that's worth a great deal. UK-based, of course.
My mentor is local. My preferred partners are local wherever possible. There are some things that have to go offshore, acknowledged plainly. But those are kept to an absolute minimum.
Showing up in person.
The game fairs. The livery yards. The noticeboards at the stables. Dropping leaflets by hand rather than running a targeted ad. Turning up at shows with a bell tent and a genuine willingness to have a conversation.
You can't build that kind of trust from behind a screen. You have to show up.
Premium work, made with care, by people who choose this community on purpose.
The portrait you commission from Wolfe & Fox is premium work, made by hand, retouched with a light touch, printed by people practically down the road who care about the craft. It costs what it costs because that's what it's worth and it's why, when someone asks me to discount, I gently hold the line.
With muddy boots and a full heart,
Jules x
